How to thrive in a world beyond our control

August 3, 2023

Life is full of uncertainties. From sudden changes in the economy to unexpected personal challenges, we often find ourselves in situations that are beyond our control. But what if we told you that there's a way to navigate these uncertainties and thrive, regardless of what life throws at you? The secret lies in focusing on what we can control and letting go of what we can't.

The ancient philosophy of Stoicism teaches us exactly this. The Stoics believed that while we can't control everything that happens to us, we can control how we respond. As the famous Stoic philosopher Epictetus once said, "We cannot choose our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we respond to them."

So, how can we apply this ancient philosophy to our modern financial lives? Here are a few strategies that you may find useful, inspiring, or interesting:

Focus on your reactions

When faced with financial uncertainty, it's easy to panic or make rash decisions. But remember, while you can't control the economy, you can control your reactions. Instead of panicking, take a deep breath, assess the situation objectively, and make a plan.

Make sound decisions

In uncertain times, it's more important than ever to remember that your financial decisions are just that: yours. You can prioritise what’s important and meaningful to you, and you are in control of what happens with your money and how you use it to help you live the life you want to lead.

Manage stress

Financial stress can be overwhelming, but there are methods within your power and control that can help you manage that feeling and that reaction. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and regular exercise can help manage stress levels and improve your overall wellbeing, helping you make sound financial decisions and maintain a sense of control.

Seek advice

If you're unsure about a financial decision, don't hesitate to seek advice. Whether it's from a financial advisor, a trusted friend, or a family member, getting a second opinion can help you make more informed decisions.

Remember, thriving in a world beyond our control isn't about avoiding challenges or uncertainties. It's about focusing on what we can control, making sound decisions, and managing our reactions. As another famous Stoic, Marcus Aurelius, once said, "You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realise this, and you will find strength."
